VNS Federal Services (Veolia) has been awarded a five-year Basic Ordering Agreement (BOA) from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to help the agency clean up low-level and mixed low-level waste at legacy sites around the U.S.

Authorized users of these BOAs include all DOE offices, such as Environmental Management (EM), the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), DOE laboratories and project offices. The BOAs have a five-year ordering period, and the value will be decided at the task-order level.

This marks the second Nationwide BOA for LLW and MLLW that Veolia has received; the first was in late 2020.

Through this contract vehicle, Veolia will provide DOE with unique treatment services through its national network of treatment services, including the GeoMelt® in-container vitrification technology, which has successfully treated sodium-bearing wastes from DOE – one of the services highlighted in the BOA scope. Over the years, GeoMelt® has successfully treated more than 28,000 metric tons of waste.

Veolia also has the following additional capabilities to help DOE treat LLW and MLLW:

  • Alaron Nuclear Services, a fully licensed and integrated Radioactive Materials Facility in Pennsylvania, treats and disposes of LLW.
  • Veolia North America incineration facilities in Port Arthur, Texas, Sauget, Illinois, and Gum Springs, Arkansas. These facilities provide a full range of incineration technology through the use of both rotary kiln and fixed-hearth design. This allows Veolia the flexibility to manage hard-to-handle waste and the ability to handle bulk or drummed waste, thus eliminating the expense of special containers or special packaging.

Through the BOA, Veolia is pleased to be able to offer these waste treatment services, as well as ancillary services related to waste packaging, shipping and technical support.
