Veolia Nuclear Solutions – Federal Services part of
contract-winning team to operate two DOE landfills tasked with disposing D&D waste from the Hanford Site
Veolia’s U.S. nuclear clean up arm is part of a joint venture tasked with Operations, Inspection and Maintenance of two DOE landfills in Washington.
Central Plateau Cleanup Company (CPCCo) has selected a joint venture between Veolia Nuclear Solutions - Federal Services (VNSFS) and CTI and Associates (CTI) to manage two landfills at the Hanford Site, a complex nuclear clean-up effort in Washington State. CPCCo is a prime contractor for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) at the Hanford Site.
The two-year, $36 million subcontract includes an option for two 2-year extensions worth an additional $88 million to support operations through calendar year 2029. The official contract start date was January 1, 2023.
Under this contract, the joint venture, CTI-VNSFS Environmental, LLC (CVE) will perform landfill management, operations, inspection and maintenance services at the Environmental Restoration Disposal Facility (ERDF) and the Integrated Disposal Facility (IDF). VNSFS has performed these services at ERDF since 2013, and at IDF since 2020.
ERDF and IDF enable decontamination and decommissioning (D&D) and other clean-up activities such as waste treatment, groundwater remediation and contaminated soil excavation, by having safe, compliant and approved disposal facilities on the Hanford site.
ERDF is a 107-acre landfill in the center of Hanford for the disposal of low-level radioactive, hazardous and mixed wastes generated from clean-up activities. Nearly 19 million tons of waste have been disposed of at ERDF since operations began in 1996. The IDF is an essential component of a high-priority project to begin treating Hanford tank waste.
CVE grew out of a Mentor-Protégé agreement approved by the U.S. Small Business Association in July 2020. The two companies bring complementary strengths in self-performing landfill engineering, construction and operations.
CTI has more than 25 years of on-site waste disposal experience at more than 10 DOE sites. VNSFS adds its existing knowledge, experience and personnel to the team as well as a tremendous depth and diversity of waste treatment and disposal resources.
DOE began clean-up work at Hanford after a 1989 agreement, two years after the last of the site’s nine nuclear reactors went offline. Five plants within the site handled 110,000 tons of fuel from those reactors, which ran along the Columbia River, necessitating a significant clean-up effort that continues today.
This award is the second significant win for the joint venture. In November 2021, CVE won the contract for the installation of a perimeter intrusion, detection and assessment system (PIDAS) at the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The contract is part of a Security Infrastructure Revitalization Program at the Y-12 complex and is expected to be complete in the summer of 2024.
